Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation Overview

Augmentation mammoplasty, or Breast Augmentation, is a surgical procedure to increase the size and volume of the breasts, as well as to improve their shape through the use of implants. The implants may be placed in a position below the glands (sub glandular) or in a position behind the major pectoral muscle (retro muscular). Careful analysis of breast width, projection, and height are critical in surgical planning and will determine implant selection and placement. Request an online evaluation today!

Breast Implant Type

In general, we recommend the use of a cohesive silicone gel implant. This material confers naturalness due to its similar consistency to breast tissue. Depending on the structural profile of your breast, either round, anatomical (teardrop) or a hybrid of both types of implants is selected to best suit your body. Round implants are circular in shape. This option has a tendency to make breasts look fuller in the upper pole. Additionally, they are softer than teardrop implants. Teardrop implants are considered anatomic because of their shape, which is similar to natural breasts. These implants have a higher defree of fullness in the lower pole compared to the upper.

While being anatomic in shape, this option also feels fimer than round implants. However, the best of both now exists with the Motiva Ergonomix implant. The soft gel adapst to the natural breast shape, allowing for the desired silhuoette that an anatomical implant normally provides, while also allowing for the smoothness and better response to body movement of a round implant. The result is a natural profile and soft feel.

Anesthesia

During the Breast Augmentation procedure, anesthesia may be general, regional (spinal), and/or intravenous sedation in combination with local anesthesia in the area being treated.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Duration

The surgical procedure takes place over an average period of 90-120 minutes. If necessary, this period may be extended. However, the surgical procedure time should not be confused with the amount of time the patient will be in the operating room. That amount of time will also include the administering of anesthesia and postoperative recovery.

Hospitalization Period

Under normal circumstances, the hospitalization period is approximately 1 day after the Breast Augmentation procedure.

Postoperative Care

Wear the post-op bra 24/7 for 30 days following surgery. Strenuous activity, exercise and lifting of objects over 5 lbs should be avoided for a month. Additionally, there should be no raising of the arms overhead during this period. Showering is allowed 48 hours after the procedure. No tub soaking, entering a swimming pool, hot tub, or body of water while drains are in place and for 2 weeks following surgery.
